Gooldrop Residence

A new English Tutor home that a builder had left in poor shape created many challenges for the TRGD design team. It had a large, white, poured-concrete wall along the rear property line that dominated and obstructed the view from the back of the home. There were major drainage problems requiring re-grading the backyard so that run-off water would run naturally toward catch basins TRGD had installed for that purpose. Then using decorative and visually-appealing steel grates they hid them from view. Next, they covered the glaring concrete wall with beautiful Boston ivy. The garden layout was designed to break the back yard into two separate garden spaces; a large garden room for recreation and another, more intimate room with a fountain that could be viewed along a site line visible from the front door along a interior corridor and out through a kitchen window. This garden has become a very private extension of the owner's home enabling them to take full advantage of the entire space, inside and out.
